Grand Casemates Square

On your holiday to Gibraltar, there’s one particular place you won’t want to miss out on. The Grand Casemates Square is a bustling social area full of amazing retail outlets, historical monuments and quaint eateries. The historic square got its name from the Grand Casemates which was built by the British and used in several wars throughout history. After being completed in 1817, Grand Casemates Square was used by the military for decades but in recent years has become a hub for tourists to enjoy the vibrant community of Gibraltar. Just to the north end of Main Street, this is a must-see spot if you really want to experience Gibraltar. Here’s a handy guide that outlines the history of Grand Casemates Square and some of the things you can do and see around the area.

The land where the Square was built was originally a beach, which was the location of where the first Moroccan settlers landed during the Moorish period. The settlement soon became a thriving place for trade and was home to an increasing number of people. During the 15th century the Spanish took control of the area which lead to big refurbishments and new developments. Back then the area around Grand Casemates Square formed part of the old town and was walled off by gates and a series of towers. Due to unstable ground, the structures built by the Spanish eventually began to sink and had to be demolished.

The British attempted to rebuild the local structures after the Great Siege but eventually levelled the square so it could be used for public events and military parades. Today Grand Casemates Square is a commercial hotspot full of shops, boutiques and bars. As you head out from your suite at the Eliott Hotel Gibraltar take a stroll through the square and you’ll find a thriving community of friendly locals and excited tourists.

Explore the vibrant square and browse some of the gorgeous boutiques and luxury shops. If you want to find a beautiful gift for a loved one or friend back home then visit Gibraltar Crystal.
