Back then the area around Grand Casemates Square formed part of the old town and was walled off by gates and a series of towers. Due to unstable ground, the structures built by the Spanish eventually began to sink and had to be demolished.
The British attempted to rebuild the local structures after the Great Siege but eventually levelled the square so it could be used for public events and military parades.
