These remarkable works are the brainchild of visionary curator Ronnie Alecio, created in collaboration with acclaimed street artist Jupp and represent a groundbreaking celebration of Gibraltar’s artistic heritage.
The murals pay homage to Gustavo Bacarisas, one of Gibraltar’s most renowned artists who was himself a resident of Castle Street. These large-scale artworks draw inspiration directly from Bacarisas’ original paintings, bringing his timeless vision to life on the very streets where he once lived and worked. This creates a powerful connection between Gibraltar’s artistic past and its dynamic cultural present.
This innovative project has received official support from Gibraltar’s Street Art Committee, which includes representatives from the Heritage Trust and several Government Departments including Town Planning. This collaboration ensures that the murals not only celebrate artistic expression but also respect Gibraltar’s rich historical context.
The Castle Street murals represent the beginning of an ambitious cultural initiative. The Gibraltar Government plans to work with Ronnie Alecio and his team to extend this street art concept to other areas of Gibraltar throughout 2025 and beyond, supporting ongoing urban regeneration and cultural development programmes that position Gibraltar as a leading destination for contemporary art and cultural tourism.

Boat Procession at Coaling Island
5th September | 7pm Assembly, 7:30pm Start
Witness a deeply moving maritime ceremony that honours Gibraltar’s profound connection to the sea while paying tribute to all those who have lost their lives in its waters. This sacred procession represents one of Gibraltar’s most poignant traditions, combining spiritual blessing with maritime remembrance.
A Sacred Maritime Tradition
Organized by the Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe in collaboration with Gibraltar Cultural Services, this solemn ceremony brings together Gibraltar’s entire maritime community. The event receives support from an impressive coalition of organizations including the Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron, Dolphin Adventure, Steven Segui representing the Cormorant Camber Boat Owners Club, the Royal Gibraltar Police, Gibraltar Port Authority, HM Customs, Gibraltar Defence Police and the Department of the Environment.
The procession serves a dual sacred purpose: the blessing of the sea and vessels ensures safe passage for all who venture onto Gibraltar’s waters, while simultaneously serving as a moving Act of Remembrance for all souls lost at sea. This profound ceremony reflects Gibraltar’s deep understanding of the sea’s dual nature – as both provider and taker of life.
Following the initial blessing ceremony, boat owners from across Gibraltar join in a spectacular procession toward the South Mole. There, participants take part in the laying of natural flowers upon the waters – a beautiful and symbolic gesture that honours the memory of those who have perished at sea while celebrating the enduring bond between Gibraltar and its surrounding waters.
This ceremony reflects Gibraltar’s strategic maritime importance throughout history, from ancient Phoenician traders to modern naval operations, acknowledging that the sea has been both Gibraltar’s lifeline and the final resting place for countless souls throughout the centuries.
